Small, sacred Burbank school to shut doors

first_img AD Quality Auto 360p 720p 1080p Top articles1/5READ MORE11 theater productions to see in Southern California this week, Dec. 27-Jan. 2Parents received notices about the school’s closure May 18. Pending an 11th-hour turnaround, the last day of classes will be June 15. Over the last five years, the K-5 school saw its enrollment drop from 169 students to 67 this year. Tuition and fees are $4,250 a year. The school considered raising tuition by $1,000 per student, but parents told the school that would be too expensive, said Ron White, pastor at American Lutheran Church. “All the evidence is this is directly related to housing costs, because it parallels declines in enrollment in Burbank public schools,” White said. One advantage the school used to have over the public schools was that it allowed parents who lived outside Burbank to enroll their children, making it easy for parents who worked in the city to have their children nearby. But to combat its own declining enrollment, Burbank Unified in recent years has also let parents enroll their children if they work in the city, which has drained students from American Lutheran. On Thursday, the school put on a show in the church. About a dozen parents sat in the pews watching their children sing pop tunes or bang out samba rhythms on conga drums. Parent Bonnie Hill, a vice president at Warner Bros., said she was almost in tears at the performance. “I moved to Burbank as a widow, and this school became like a family,” she said. Genia Jarred teaches a computer class at the school, which only last year raised enough money to buy 14 new computers. “I’m waiting for somebody miraculously to say, `Don’t close,”‘ she said. The church’s congregation will vote within the next few weeks on administrators’ recommendation to shut it down. The school’s students get daily religious lessons, studying the Bible and Martin Luther. They play basketball in a carpeted gym that doubles as a church assembly hall. Kindergartners learn in a classroom with a bust of the Statue of Liberty in one corner and a sketch of a laughing Jesus posted by the teacher’s desk. When the school was first created in 1946, it served children of the church’s congregants. But in recent decades it has accepted children of all faiths, and its mix of students has also become ethnically diverse. “Basic to our belief is resurrection comes out of death,” White said. “So we’ll just seek to find new avenues of serving, especially the children and families of this community.” alex.dobuzinskis@dailynews.com (818) 546-3304160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. BURBANK – Over the years, American Lutheran School’s former students have been married in the same adjoining church where they prayed as children. Other alumni have returned to the private Christian school to enroll their own kids. Some have come to the church for counseling when they faced a crisis. Classes were small – 20 students or fewer. But the community of parents and students that has formed around the 60-year-old school at 755 N. Whitnall Highway could be coming to an end as the campus faces closure because of declining enrollment. “Everyone’s been doing a lot of crying the last week,” Principal Joanne Biondi said. last_img

Adobe Premiere Pro: Applying Audio Effects to Multiple Tracks

first_imgUse the audio sub mix feature in Adobe Premiere Pro to apply audio effects to multiple tracks at once – a trick for working smarter, not harder! If you’re looking to speed up your workflow, improve consistency in the sound of your clips and better organize your audio, consider applying audio effects to submixes in Premiere Pro.  Submixes provide a quick and easy way for multiple audio clips (and tracks) to all use the same effects and filters.  Make one change to an effect and it will change all the audio clips associated with that submix.  Huge timesaver! In this Adobe Premiere Pro tutorial we’ll tackle:When to apply audio effects to multiple tracksUsing the Audio WorkspaceCreating a SubmixApplying audio effects to a SubmixWhen to Apply Audio Effects to Multiple Tracks in PremiereBefore we get into the details, lets talk about when you would need to apply audio effects to multiple tracks in Premiere Pro.Say that you have 2 tracks of  narration that you want to apply the same EQ to. The hard way would be to apply EQ to each clip on each track separately. The less hard way is to apply the effect to to each track, and the easiest is to apply the effect to a submit so the EQ effects multiple tracks.I tend to go ahead and make sub mixes in Premiere Pro even if I have just one audio track. That way if I do add multiple tracks later, the submit is already setup and I just assign the additional tracks.Using the Audio Workspace in Premiere ProUsing Premiere Pro’s workspaces save you time in that they set up a layout suited to specific tasks.  In this instace we’ll want to work with the Audio layout.Go to Window > Workspace> Audio. This workspace rearranges the layout, with the Audio Mixer on a tab with the Source Window and  the Project top left.Click on the triangle top left on the Audio Mixer to reveal the Effects and Sends panel.Creating a Submix in Premiere ProTo use the same effect on multiple Premiere Pro audio tracks, you create a submix and send both tracks to it, and apply the effect to the submix. For Audio 1, click in the Sends panel, and in the first slot click and select create stereo submix.Below that click on the Master pulldown and change it to submix 1.  Now Audio 1 is sent to submix 1.Repeat the steps to send other tracks to the submix.   Simple enough, right?  Now, let’s look at how to apply effects to submixes.Applying audio effects to a SubmixClick in the the top slot of the Effect panel (top left panel of the Audio Mixer) to add an Effect. (I added EQ).To adjust the EQ, double click  it to open the parameters for the EQ and adjust as needed (I rolled off the low and high end)You can add up to 5 effects and 5 submixes.  You can also rename your tracks and sub mixes as needed by clicking on their names (turns blue).Utilize the submix feature in Adobe Premiere Pro is a surefire way to make your editing more efficient!Got a Premiere Pro comment or tip to share?Let us know in the comments!last_img read more

Alliance partners fight over seats in Jharkhand

first_imgThe grand alliance of Opposition parties in Jharkhand has run into trouble following tussle among the Congress, the Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (JVM) and the Communist Party of India (CPI) over seat distribution. This comes just days before the Congress is to launch its campaign with a rally by Congress president Rahul Gandhi and the other four alliance partners — the JVM, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and the CPI — on March 2 in Ranchi. In principle, the alliance partners have agreed that the Congress will contest seven seats, the JMM four seats, the JVM two seats and the RJD one. The Congress is driving a hard bargain to improve its electoral presence here. In 2014, it drew a blank and in 2009, it won only one seat. The Congress and the JVM are both keen to contest from the Godda Lok Sabha constituency, currently held by BJP’s Nishikant Dubey. According to sources, JVM chief Babulal Marandi is adamant that Godda seat should go to his close associate Pradeep Yadav. The Congress, however, is not willing to concede the seat that it counts among one of its strongholds. Instead of Godda, the Congress has asked the JVM to fight from Chattra. The other seat it is offering is Kodarma which Mr. Marandi has won twice in 2006 and 2009.What makes it trickier for the Congress is that the JVM has a pan-Jharkhand presence and if it is not kept in good humour the party has the capacity to hurt the alliance in every seat.“We have resolved the issue but at this point I can’t say who will be fielded from Godda,” Jharkhand Pradesh Congress Committee president Ajoy Kumar said. Talks on: MarandiMr. Marandi, however, had a different take. He said the talks were still on. “The Congress should remember that the aim at present should be to stall the BJP and Narendra Modi. And for that, one must choose the person who has the best chance to win,” Mr. Marandi told The Hindu. He conceded that considering the pressure from cadres in both parties, the resolution may take some more time. The Congress has also rejected the CPI’s demand for the Hazaribagh seat, which is currently held by BJP leader and Union Minister Jayant Sinha. The CPI candidate, Bhubneshwar Prasad Mehta, has won the seat twice in 2004 and in 1991. “We have already conveyed to the CPI that we will not able to spare any Lok Sabha seat for the party but will suitably accommodate it in the Assembly elections scheduled for the end of the year,” Mr. Kumar said. The CPI is mulling on going it alone in the Lok Sabha election as per the demand of its rank and file. The JMM too has been trying to get the Jamshedpur constituency. The PCC president is expected to fight from there and the Congress has told in no uncertain terms that it will not sacrifice the seat for the alliance. The four seats that are expected to go to JMM are Rajmahal, Dumka, Giridih and Khunti. Palmau, the Lok Sabha seat bordering Bihar, is expected to go to the RJD.last_img read more

Saudi Arabia to not execute teenager arrested for taking part in antigovt

first_imgMurtaja Qureiris was 13-years-old when he was arrested for participating in anti-government protests.CNNA young man from Saudi Arabia who was arrested when he was 13-years-old for participating in an anti-government protest will not be executed and could be released by 2022, officials have confirmed. The man, identified as Murtaja Quereris, was arrested by the Saudi officials back in September 2014. He was granted an initial 12 year jail term, which includes time served in prison since his arrest. After four years of probation, he is currently left with three years of prison term left to serve, sources revealed to Reuters. As a child, Quereris was sent to the detention centre for participating in bike protests in Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province during the Arab Spring uprising in 2011. He was later moved to al-Mabaheth prison in May 2017, an adult facility, even though he was still only 16 years old.The charges held against him include participating in anti-government protests, attending the funeral of his brother, Ali Qureiris (killed in a protest in 2011), joining a “terrorist organisation,” throwing Molotov cocktails at a police station and firing at security forces.Qureiris case caught international attention after CNN did an investigative piece the teenager boy who was facing death penalty by the Saudi government. The report and later human rights group, Amnesty International highlighted the issue of state-sponsored anti-dissent executions of those who participated in anti-government rallies in Saudi Arabia. It is argued that Qureiris’ case is part of the government’s crackdown of Shi’a minorities and political dissenters since the Crown prince Muhammad bin Salman took over the throne in 2015.In April, officials had carried out the execution of two minors including Abdulkareem al-Hawaj, a Shi’a boy who was arrested when he was 16-years old based on offences related to involvement in anti-government protests. He was among 37 men put to death in one day as part of an execution spree. Most of the executed men belonged to the Shi’a community.According to the Interior Ministry, Saudi Arabia executed 139 people in 2018.last_img read more
