Seaman EXCLUSIVE – I would love Wenger to win the league again to shut people up

first_imgArsenal legend David Seaman has sent a message of warning to the ‘Wenger Out’ brigade, insisting a change in boss could see the Gunners slip further away from top silverware.Supporters have come out in force against Wenger this season after another Premier League title challenge went up in smoke. And though the Arsenal stars achieved redemption of sorts by beating fierce rivals Tottenham to second place on the final day of the season, a large number of fans are still eager for change. This is a big summer for the under-fire Wenger, who fans are hoping will make a number of top signings to strengthen the squad, having made just one last summer – £10million goalkeeper Petr Cech.Cech’s impact was evident this term – the Czech veteran won the golden glove award with 16 league clean sheets – but added attacking verve and defensive stability is surely needed if the Gunners want to end their hunt for top flight glory.Former Arsenal and England No.1 Seaman is fully aware of the team’s recent shortcomings, but he insists getting the axe to fall on stalwart Wenger is not the answer.Speaking on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast, Seaman said: “Arsenal had a good season. It wasn’t brilliant because we didn’t win anything, but to finish second is a great achievement.“But there are still doubts; doubts over the manager and the team and whether it can push on.“For me, Arsene is the best. I love the guy and I certainly don’t want to see him leave. I’ve worked with him and know how good he is.“More and more fans getting on the ‘Wenger Out’ bandwagon… and I’m just desperate for him to win the league again just to shut everybody up.“I think the only way you would be able to stop that [the fan backlash] is by signing top quality players. We need the finished article, not the young, up-and-coming guys.“But what frightens me, is that if the club don’t go out and buy these players in the summer, and Arsene does leave, where does that leave Arsenal?“A lot of fans think that the base that Arsene has set is the standard, but it won’t be. It will fall below that if we get a new manager in.”last_img read more
